Oregonia Room

This room opened in 2003 with the generous help of Frank and Barbara Sherwood.  Frank's family owned the Sherwood General Store in Oregonia.  Founded in 1802 by Nebo Gaunt, the town was originally called Gaunt's Mill because of the mill along the Little Miami River.  It lies a little south of Waynesville.  The name was changed to Freeport and then in 1845 it was changed to Oregonia.  The town was a typical railroad and mill town but also was the home to the Oregonia Bridge and Iron Works.

One of our trustees was told this story by an old man who lived his entire life on his family's farm in Oregonia.  The gangster John Dillinger would hide out when in this area at a camp the gang set up along the bank of the river.  He and his brother as young boys would take fresh milk, bacon, and eggs to the camp.
